ESL/GED Instructor

Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (HCHC) is a non-profit, community based organization established in 1989 to help combat the severe shortage of affordable housing for low income families, seniors and the disabled in Los Angeles County. 

Position Title:  English as a Second Language/General Equivalency Diploma Instructor 
Department: Resident Services
Classification:  Independent Contractor (4 hours/week) 
Supervisor: Director of Resident Services

Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (HCHC) is a non-profit developer of permanent, affordable housing serving low-income individuals, families, people living with HIV/AIDS and senior citizens. HCHC’s ESL/GED instructor will teach ESL and GED classes to HCHC residents and will provide educational instruction based on participants’ academic level to meet their individual goals.


  • Actively recruit, assess and enroll program participants into appropriate level of classes.
  • Conduct ESL and GED classes for HCHC residents at identified HCHC buildings.
  • Develop and implement curriculum for ESL and GED classes based on participants’ academic level and appropriate topics.
  • Ensure that the ESL curriculum involves listening, speaking, reading and writing the English language.
  • Meet with the Director of Resident Services to provide updates, status and attainment of goals with residents.
  • Observe and report to appropriate authorities and HCHC Director of Resident Services of any indications or suspicions of child abuse, elder abuse or domestic violence.
  • Monitor and document participant progress and outcomes through training, testing, and assessment.
  • Prepare documentation of services through resident sign in sheets, month end reports and other reporting as requested.
  • Maintain confidentiality of resident participation and activities as per HCHC policy and guidelines.
  • Prepare annual report if requested.
  • Oversee intern supervision relevant to services rendered to or in connection with HCHC.


  • Master’s degree preferred, or bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience related to field of course instruction.
  • At least 2 years of in-class ESL and/or GED teaching experience.
  • Experience working with diverse populations, including homeless, HIV/AIDS, and those with chemical dependency issues is preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Microsoft office including Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Adult Education Teaching Credential and licensed to teach English as a Second Language.
  • Ability to plan, follow through and work independently as well as in a team relationship.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Must have and maintain a valid California driver’s license and vehicle insurance as required by law. Driving record must meet HCHC insurance requirements. Must be willing to travel between sites.


This position requires daily use of office equipment. May need to unload, lift, push and/or carry up to 40 pounds of food/donations.
