Position Summary

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Controller is responsible for managing the accounting operations of Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (HCHC), a nonprofit public benefit corporation, and about fifty affiliated entities including limited partnerships and limited liability corporations. HCHC has completed the development of 33 properties, has two buildings under construction, and will soon have two more buildings under construction. HCHC also has a rapidly growing property management business that is projected to have almost 1,000 units under management by the end of 2024. The Controller is responsible for ensuring that HCHC has policies and procedures that adhere to best practices and ensure there are proper checks and balances to prevent and/or detect fraud. The Controller oversees a staff of five accounting professionals and leads meetings with two Committees of the Board of Directors including the Audit Committee and the Finance Committee. 

Essential Position Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership consistent with the organization’s mission and strategic plan priorities. 
  • Maintain financial books and records in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). 
  • Design, implement, and monitor internal financial controls for efficiency, accuracy and fraud prevention. 
  • Responsible for financial activities including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, financial statements, cash flow projections, budgeting, monthly close, cost allocation and payroll. 
  • Analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner. 
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/funding period; prepare financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants and lenders. 
  • Serve as the main point of contact with auditors. Ensure that audits and tax returns are completed in accordance with deadlines imposed by financing partners and government agencies. 
  • Oversee the work of auditors and accountants to prepare all federal and state income tax returns and all legal and corporate filings for HCHC and affiliated entities. 
  • Coordinate and oversee construction management accounting practices. Monitor operating and constructions accounts for development projects and review the monthly account reconciliation and analysis. Work with housing development staff to complete cost certifications. 
Other Responsibilities
  • Actively participate as a member of the senior management team to implement strategic plan priorities and to meet the Company’s short- and long-term objectives. 
  • Assist with other projects and duties as needed. 
Supervisory Responsibilities

Hire, train, retain, supervise and conduct performance evaluations for staff in the accounting department.

  • Guide the professional development of accounting team members. 
  • Evaluate the services and pricing offered by vendors and independent contractors (IC). 
  • Negotiate with and select vendors and ICs and oversee their performance and work product. 
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Bachelor’s in Accounting/Business Administration is strongly preferred but substantial related experience is an acceptable substitute. 
  • CPA/MBA a plus. 
  • Minimum of five years of senior accounting experience required, preferably in real estate. 
  • Minimum of five years of leadership experience managing a Finance/Accounting team preferred. 
  • Experience within a real estate industry, housing development and/or property management company is strongly preferred. 
Required Competencies
  • Expert knowledge in accounting software such as Real Page and the Microsoft suite of software programs. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, manage relationship with vendors, and lead accounting team. 
  • Excellent understanding of real estate finance, processing construction draws, accounting practices and property management functions. 
  • Leadership skills to motivate staff to achieve top performance and to implement changes. 
  • Ability to quickly obtain and maintain a thorough understanding of the various financial reporting and general ledger structures. 
  • Demonstrate leadership, teamwork and professionalism with a positive attitude. 
  • Real Page software experience strongly preferred. 
  • Knowledge of the federal low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) program strongly preferred. 
Physical Requirements

This position requires daily use of office equipment. May need to lift up to 20 pounds. HCHC requires employees to be vaccinated as a condition of employment, subject to any accommodation as may be required by law. 

Work Environment

HCHC is hybrid environment and requires senior leaders to be in the multiple days per work week. The essential responsibilities of this position are performed in a busy indoor environment in the main office. The employee must be able to stay focused in an environment with interruptions and distractions. Other responsibilities, such as special events, may require work to be completed outdoors. 

Travel Requirements

Periodic travel within Los Angeles County for meetings and trainings. Infrequent travel outside of Los Angeles County by car or airplane for trainings, meetings and conferences. Must have and maintain a valid California driver’s license and insurance as required by law. 


$110,000 to $160,000 annually. Hiring rates are determined by skills, knowledge, experience, and internal equity.
