Hollywood Community Housing Creates New Affordable Housing that is Environmentally Sustainable

Hollywood Community Housing Corporation (HCHC) is nearing completion of a new apartment community at 14733-14803 S. Stanford Avenue located in the West Rancho Dominguez neighborhood of unincorporated Los Angeles County. The building complex, named Stanford Avenue Apartments, will be home to 85 households including low-income families and people who have experienced homelessness. 

HCHC’s mission is to transform communities by creating affordable housing that achieves design excellence and environmental sustainability. Our mission is aligned with the public policy objectives of the State of California’ Tax Credit Allocation Committee (CTCAC), the Los Angeles County Development Authority (LACDA) and LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas who all share our commitment to creating new affordable homes that achieve the highest levels of environmental sustainability. 

“The future residents of Standard Apartments will benefit not just from a high quality and affordable home but one that has the most up-to-date, environmentally sustainable design features,” Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas said. “This will be a model not just of social justice but of environmental justice, which is much needed across South Los Angeles and communities across the County.”

HCHC selected an award-winning architectural firm, Shelter LLP, to design Stanford Avenue Apartments, because of their commitment to sustainable design and placemaking. Stanford Avenue Apartments incorporates sustainable design elements, including energy efficient appliances, low-flow water fixtures, solar thermal water heating, drought tolerant landscaping, and many others. The building’s green elements were major drivers throughout the design process and HCHC aims to achieve a platinum LEED-certification.

Emilio Salas, LACDA Acting Executive Director, said, “The extreme heatwave we have experienced these past few days stipulates the need for more environmental sustainability features in affordable housing developments, like Stanford Avenue Apartments. The LACDA is proud to partner with Hollywood Community Housing to build inexpensive homes in Los Angeles County without compromise to the environment.”

Future residents will enjoy a number of community amenities within walking distance, including a recreational public park across the street, an elementary school, grocery stores, a pharmacy, and public transportation. The project is slated to open in November 2020.
