Palo Verde Apartments provides 49 newly constructed apartments for low-income households, including 25 apartments for formerly homeless veterans. The development was designed by Shelter LLP, construction was completed in November and residents moved in during January of 2019.
Palo Verde Apartments incorporates numerous sustainable building features including solar panels for pre-heated hot water, drought tolerant landscaping, locally sourced materials, high-efficiency lighting and ENERGY STAR appliances, and low flow fixtures (high-efficiency showers, toilets, and lavatory faucets) to moderate on-site water consumption. Native landscaping is incorporated into the design to reduce water runoff and landscape irrigation. No turf was used in the landscaping, further conserving water usage. Water conservation efforts are also promoted through building operations and resident education.
HCHC achieved Platinum LEED-certification, the highest level of distinction awarded by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED, which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental, is a green building certification program that recognizes best-in-class building strategies and practices.
